Blackadder Single Malt Tasting - Federal Wine - Boston USA

If a world came out for last week’s bargains, the eight planets, Pluto, and the asteroid belt came for the Blackadder 2006 debut. Upstairs and down the store was a forest of outstretched arms waving glasses eager to be anointed with the elixir of barley and peat. Downstairs an impromptu dram brigade passed glasses back to people in the Alsace or Burgundy aisles that I could not reach with a bottle.

Joe, “the Scotch Doctor”, as he was called by the Boston Globe, exhorted the crowd on the virtues of the six malts we showed. Phil stood astride a box alternately pouring tastes and passing out bottles like a preacher at the podium of a revival tent.

It was a revival of Blackadder in America and of the crowd that came out for the meeting, many were saved. But I’ll let the Scotch Doctor tell it:

Joe writes:
First we tasted the Macallan 45%. It is a Macallan with no sherry and showed its bourbon barrel wonderfully and with great malt depth. With a little water it opens to wonderful dram. $104.00

The Longmorn Raw Cask (cask strength) is a big whisky that has the distillery house style of a cereal maltiness with great depth also. With water it opens to show a very intricate whisky of great beauty. This distillery should be seen by all malt lovers. A HIDDEN GEM!! $133.00

We showed Blair Athol both at 45% and Cask strength. The 45 is a hidden beauty, seen very rarely. It is an elegant sherry cask from the old school. It is for people who would rather have a good dram right out of the bottle. Without water the sherry and the malt just come together in multi layered harmony. $ 90.00

The Raw Cask Blair Athol is just an amazing whisky. If you are a lover of sherry cask whisky this is a bottle you want to have. This is a distillery that all should have the chance to taste. Elegance in a bottle!!!!$120.00

Bruichladdich Raw Cask 19 Y.O. 54.4% This is a CRACKER the most commented on whisky of the evening. This is a single malt that is just so pleasant and multi layered with hints of apricot and pear on the nose.

The palate is just wonderful with a honeyed sweetness that starts with fruit and works to a warm spice. The finish shows of exotic summer fruits. It is rich and warming and goes on and on. A Class Act, precious and graceful. $180.00

Smoking Islay 45% We tasted both at 45% and 55% . People could not get enough SMOKE. The Smoking Islay was the most purchased of the night and the most requested for a second taste. Although a young whisky, it is very smoky. With the addition of water, it is one of the biggest smokiest single malts on the market. You peat freaks will want a bottle or two! 45%: $76.95
